How long have you been using OK compost bags at the checkout counters of Migros Vaud?
For the past 12 years (since November 1st, 2013), and this to the complete satisfaction of our customers, composting facilities, and local authorities (both cantonal and communal).
Did your customers easily understand this rollout and, above all, how to use these compostable bags?
There are two distinct aspects to consider. First, customers were very much in favor of phasing out single-use plastic bags, so their removal was very well received.
Second, the possibility of composting more easily with these bags is, to this day, not yet fully taken advantage of by the majority of customers.
Which is unfortunate, because not only is this a very concrete gesture for the planet, but the potential savings of 30% on taxed garbage bag costs is also a real financial opportunity — a win-win situation.
In your opinion, what is the future of compostable bags?
Clearly, just as plastic bags used to be everywhere in large quantities, now it's time for compostable bags to take their place. It's up to us to promote their advantages (see above) and encourage smart and efficient usage.
A rough estimate: 10 times fewer bags used compared to old single-use plastic bags, and tens of thousands of extra tons of compost added to the circular system — and that much less waste going to incineration.
