Recommended design for biowaste bags.

The German Association for Compostable Products (Verbund kompostierbare Produkte e.V.) published recommendations for a coherent labelling and design of compostable biowaste bags. The uniform design intends to help consumers and waste collectors to identify certified bags that are suitable for the collection of organic waste and to easily distinguish them from unsuitable, non-biodegradable plastic bags.

Biowaste is a valuable resource that can be organically recycled to quality compost. Yet, in Germany alone, around 5 million tonnes of organic waste still end up in residual incineration waste streams every year. “With this initiative, we aim to encourage separate collection by making it easier to collect biowaste at home”, says Jens Boggel, chairman of the Verbund kompostierbare Produkte.

Key visual of the recommended design is the ‘Seedling’ label, which is arranged in a grid and printed on the entire bag. The Seedling is an internationally accepted and recognized compostability label (© European Bioplastics) that is connected to the standard EN 13432/EN 14995 and a certification process managed by the independent insititutions DIN CERTCO and Vinçotte.
