Mauritius: Prohibition of plastic bags on the island in January 1, 2016

The Mauritian authorities, as announced in the Budget 2015, and for the protection of island’s environment have decided to ban as from 1 January 2016 the use of plastic bags in the country.A measure already in force since last June in Rodrigues, autonomous territorial dependency of Mauritius, where the regional assembly had voted in March 2014 a law in favor of banning of plastic bags used by merchants and in stores food.

The Rodriguan merchants expose themselves to a particularly fixed fine of up to 10,000 rupees*, after several verbalizations.

* One euro roughly equivalent to 40 rupees
